Black Twitter reacts to Doja Cat winning Best R&B category at AMAs

Some American Music Awards viewers on Twitter were stumped by the fact that singer and rapper Doja Cat won a soul / R&B trophy.

Doja cat and his music lives in a place that is firmly between pop music and R&B. That’s why some Twitter users were stumped to see the singer / rapper take home the Favorite Female Artist award in the Soul / R & B category at the American Music Awards on Sunday night.

“I do not know why they keep it in this category knowing very well that it is POP”, one now viral cheep read.

“Why did Doja Cat win JAZMINE SULLIVAN and SHE. for favorite R&B artist … what R&B music do you have? ” other order.

Along with Doja Cat, the nominees for Favorite Female R&B Artist were Sullivan, HER, Jhene aiko and UPS.

Upon accepting his award for victory, even the victor seemed surprised. “Wow. There are a lot of people I really want to thank,” said Doja Cat on the podium, “and I’ve forgotten some names because I didn’t know this was about to happen.”

The singer, nominated for her premiere in 2021, Planet she, won the fan-voted category. An user explained, “This is not a Doja problem … it is an industry problem. They classified PH as an R&B album when it clearly isn’t … the Kittens just voted where Doja was nominated. “

“I am a huge fan of Doja Cat, but I am confused as to how she is considered a Soul / R & B artist! Lol #AMAs ”, a fan wrote. Another opined: “This is very offensive to real soul / r & b artists. That’s not her genre and she shouldn’t have been nominated in this category … the awards don’t really mean anything now. “

The reaction was swift, but not directed at Doja, who appears on the tracks this year by artists ranging from City girls, Chloe x Halle and Ariana Grande for Ari Lennox and Lil Wayne and Lil Nas X. His hit Nicki minaj-assisted, “Say So (Remix)”, reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Instead, music fans and award appreciators believe that the way the category is structured should be examined.

A Twitter user wrote that the pop star’s nomination may have bigger implications.

“Just because [someone’s] black “, they published,” does not mean that their music is automatically RnB / Soul … and as if we were tired of having this conversation … like more [microaggressions] and stereotypes “.
