Cumberbatch & Dunst Refused to Speak to Each Other on Set of New Movie

Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst declined to speak to each other on the set of The Power of the Dog as part of their efforts to stay in character.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst did not speak on the set of The power of the dog to stay in character. The power of the dog is a western American drama that premiered in select theaters on November 17 and will hit Netflix on December 1, 2021. The film follows an inveterate and domineering cattle rancher, Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch), who is dedicated to tormenting the new wife of his brother and his son with mocking the cruelty until little by little forms a complex bond with the boy. The film stars Cumberbatch, Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

Cumberbatch is known for playing very arrogant and self-absorbed individuals such as Detective Sherlock Holmes and Marvel superhero Doctor Strange. However, this particular role in The power of the dog it required him to also become a menacing cowboy who is one with the earth and a cruel misogynist. To prepare for the role, Benedict analyzed his dreams and stayed in character throughout the entire shoot. Working with an acting coach, he used these techniques to really put himself in Phil’s shoes, both on and off screen.

In an interview with NME, Cumberbatch revealed that he and Dunst were not speaking to each other while remaining in character. Of course, this wasn’t natural for Cumberbatch, who was normally soft-spoken and polite, and he felt a bit of a conflict for not wanting to be mean to Dunst. However, she also chose to stay in character and they reached a mutual agreement of silence and hostility. See Cumberbatch’s statement below:

I didn’t want to be really mean to Kirsten, but I needed to stay in character. So I didn’t speak to her on set. She was the same. We were the negative to the positive of the other. [We were] repelled by each other.

In the film, Dunst plays Rose, the new wife of Phil’s brother, whom Phil immediately dislikes. Phil engages in routinely tormenting and teasing Rose to the point of driving her into alcoholism and depression. Fortunately, Cumberbatch didn’t push his tenure in character too far and didn’t launch any behind-the-scenes psychological torment. Instead, he and Dunst chose a less troublesome method of simply ignoring each other and not talking to each other. The power of the dog The early reviews have been very positive, so it seems that Cumberbatch and Dunst’s dedication to their characters paid off.

The stories of actors and actresses who stay in character during a full shoot are always intriguing to read. It is a completely different interpretation of acting in which one tries to identify and become his character, rather than just acting. Cumberbatch’s brutal and menacing cowboy in The power of the dog It is already quite a difficult character to simply portray, but much more to become reality. This intense dedication to perfectly embodying Phil’s personality may have the potential to land Cumberbatch an Oscar nomination. Viewers around the world can tune in to Netflix on December 1 to see what is likely to be an unforgettable performance by Cumberbatch at the Dog power.
