Detroit rock DJ John O’Leary found dead; suspect in custody

Detroit disc jockey John O'Leary worked for several area radio stations over the years, most recently WCSX-FM.

Police say they suspect a dirty act after the body of a veteran Detroit disc jockey was discovered Sunday in Highland Park.

John O’Leary, known to local rock listeners since the mid-1970s, was found dead with stab wounds in the backyard of his Candler Street home, police said Monday afternoon.

A suspect is being held at the Highland Park Police Jail, Highland Park Police Detective Paul Thomas said. The suspect has not been publicly named and pending charges are expected to be filed this week, Thomas said.

An investigation is ongoing.

O’Leary lived in Highland Park and was 67, according to public records.

Brian Major, an area concert promoter and close friend of the DJ, said he positively identified O’Leary’s body at the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s office Monday afternoon. Police had been unable to locate a relative, and Major said the disc jockey had no immediate living relatives.
