Valerie Bertinelli filed for legal separation from her husband Tom Vitale after 10 years of marriage.

The 61-year-old Food Network star filed the documents in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, according to court records obtained by PEOPLE.

In the documents, Bertinelli cites “irreconcilable differences” between the couple as the reason for the separation. At this time, she has not requested the dissolution of the marriage.

Court records also indicate that Bertinelli and Vitale have a prenuptial agreement to which they will adhere.

Bertinelli married Vitale in January 2011 after several years of dating. The couple was introduced by Bertinelli’s brother, Patrick.

“I think I got tired of calling him ‘my marital equivalent,'” the actress said during an appearance on The view shortly after their wedding day. “It’s good to call him my husband. It feels appropriate.”

Bertinelli was previously married from 1981 to 2007 to Eddie Van Halen, with whom she shares 30-year-old son Wolfgang.

Eddie died in October 2020 of lung cancer at age 65. After his death, Bertinelli mourned him publicly and spoke about his grief in an interview with therapist Angie Johnsey.

“You never like this new normal, but that’s what it is,” he said of life after losing someone. “It’s about finding a way to survive this new normal … that a lot of people are doing. Unfortunately, this whole year has been about death, grief and loss.”

“Too many people have lost too many things. It is just destroying what is happening,” he added. “Talking about pain is appropriate. We are all going through some form of that.”
